Halloween is so damn soon. And considering my track record isn’t the greatest (read: I put it off until the night of, and usually show up to my friend’s party costumeless—or, arguably worse, wearing cat ears), I’m vowing to put a liiitle bit more effort in this year. But since I’ll never be that person rolling up to the Halloween store with plenty of prep time (and plenty of $$$), I’m keeping my goals realistic by trying out this cute—and E-A-S-Y—hippie makeup tutorial, which, spoiler, is actually doable with products you definitely already own.
So buckle in, grab those bell bottoms from the back of your mom’s closet, and join me in watching beauty vlogger Matilda Rodgers break it all down in 11 simple steps, ahead.
Step 1: Orange Eyeshadow
Blend an orange eyeshadow across the middle of your eyelid. You can either stick with this light-orange color and add on more layers or you can switch to a darker shade of orange for a bolder look.
Step 2: Yellow Pigment
Next, using a compact eyeshadow brush, sweep a yellow eyeshadow along your lids. Pro tip: Wet your brush with setting spray before you dip it in your eyeshadow—the shadow sticks to the wet brush even more (preventing annoying eyeshadow fallout on your cheeks) and makes the color really stand out.
Step 3: Gold Pigment
To really level up your eye look, use your finger to tap gold glitter onto your eyelids.
Step 4: Eyeliner and Mascara
Now you’re going to dig through your makeup bag and grab that brown liquid eyeliner that you bought forever ago. Trace it along your top lash line and blend it out with a smudge brush. Next, coat your lashes in mascara, and if you want to make your eyes look bigger, stick on some falsies.
Step 5: Foundation and Concealer
Okay, so you’re basically done with your eye look. Now it’s time to put on your foundation and concealer. Make sure you follow with a setting powder so your look lasts all night.
Step 6: Contour and Highlight
Next, you’re going to want to contour your face to give it more depth and dimension. Start your contour underneath your cheekbones, then blend in concentric circles to your temples and under your jawline. To add some glow, swipe a golden highlighter across the top of your cheekbones and brow bones.
Step 7: Smudge
By now, your concealer should be set, so grab a fluffy brush and your orange eyeshadow from step one. Blend the shadow underneath your lower lashes.
Step 8: Flower Petals
Not going to lie, but this step can be difficult if you’re not...artistically inclined. You can use a white eyeliner and freehand tiny star shapes around your eyes, or you can use a teeny star-shaped stencil to help guide you.
Step 9: Detailing
This step is easy enough—finish up your flowers by adding a dot of gold pigment in the center of each flower (a superprecise liner brush will help you get the job done).
Step 10: Glitter
Using an eyeshadow brush, lightly dust your work of art (aka the flowers on your face) with bronze glitter. Make sure to lock your look in place with a setting spray afterward too.
Step 11: Lip Liner and Gloss
You’ll want to keep your lips fairly simple with this look, so line them with a neutral hue that suits your skin tone and top it off with a shiny lip gloss.
The Final Look
And that’s it! Get ready to kill it at your costume party.
