CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Powerful storms ripped through the Queen City region Wednesday night, sending trees and debris falling on homes, cars and power lines.

Cody Tench said he was driving when the first storm hit his west Charlotte neighborhood. He was trying to get home to his fiancée and 2-year-old daughter who were huddled together in the bathroom.

“It was super scary at the time when everything came through, and hearing her on the phone,” Tench said.

No one in the family was hurt in the storm. A large tree fell in the backyard and broke through their fence, smashed one of their car’s front and rear windshields, and pulled power lines down.

The family has been renting their home off Mount Holly Road for about two-and-a-half years, and Tench said they have had significant tree damage before.

“One other tree went down about a month ago, took part of the power line with it, but not like this,” he said. “This deck is brand new because we had a tree fall right through it.”

Power lines snaked through the family’s lawn. Tench said one of their first calls was to Duke Energy.

“Hopefully they can get someone out here within the next 24 hours, is what they mentioned,” he said. “They said it may be in the middle of the night, around 3 or 4 a.m. They’re running 24/7 to try to get around to get the power back up.”

He said family and friends have offered them a place to stay while their power is out. The family said they’re very grateful for the support and that the damage was contained to the outside of the home.
