A mum-of-two claims a horrific gym accident left her needing £10,000 worth of dental work after her two front teeth were taken out.

Gemma McKay, 32, was using The Gym in Liverpool ONE when she claims a piece of equipment flew into her face, cutting her lip open and leaving her in agonising pain.

She said she was using the lateral pull-down machine and went to stand up and release the iron bar when Gemma, from Aigburth, claims it “catapulted off the machine and flew into the air” before smashing into her mouth.

The Gym Group said their insurance company investigated the claims but took no further action.

But Gemma, a regular gym user until the accident, said her “face exploded” and she was left with a split lip from the impact of the iron bar hitting her in the face.

She said: “I went to the hospital - I was in a lot of pain. If you imagine the entire iron bar had gone up into the air and it had landed on my teeth.

“The pain was going through my head - the full impact had gone on my teeth. I got to the hospital and the cut was directly down the cupid’s bow.

“They had to get a plastic surgeon to stitch it up, otherwise it would be misaligned. They said: ‘You’re a young girl, we want to do it properly’ and he did the best job possible but I’ve still been left with my lips lopsided. If I wear lipstick, you can see it.”

As well as being left with a scar on her lips, Gemma was also left facing a hefty dental bill - which she estimates as adding up to £11,000.

Gemma said X-rays showed she had been left with an infection in the bone, meaning she had to have re-root canal treatment.

The mum-of-two said she had to visit specialists and the dental hospital before eventually needing to get her two front teeth taken out.

She claims she now has to wear a denture for five months and needed a bone graft in order to create something for a dental impact to attach to.

Gemma said: “It’s not like (because) it’s cosmetic that I’m getting them fixed - it was because of the infection. I’ve had two kids but the pain I was in compares with birth pain.

“I was crying - I was writhing around the bed.”

Gemma is now pursuing a personal injury claim for the incident.

She told the ECHO the incident had left her feeling “very very unattractive”.

She added: “It’s horrible as you can imagine. I can’t eat in public.

"Going out with friends or a partner, I can’t eat.

“Even at home, I’m embarrassed to take it out in front of my family.”

The Gym Group confirmed that it is aware of an incident involving a member of The Gym Liverpool which took place in August 2015.

A spokesperson said: “The member concerned reported an accident involving the Lateral Pull-Down Machine.

“After a thorough investigation by The Gym Group’s insurance company into the incident, the claim made by the member was declined.”
