Rockies surged to victory over the Giants

May 9, 2024

Brenton Doyle showcased his power with a home run among his two hits, while Ezequiel Tovar highlighted a pivotal fourth inning with a triple and a double as part of his three-hit performance, propelling the Colorado Rockies to a commanding 9-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants in Denver on Thursday.

Charlie Blackmon was a force to be reckoned with, tallying a triple, a double, a single, and driving in two runs. Elias Diaz also contributed with two hits, and Cal Quantrill delivered a solid six innings on the mound to help the Rockies snap a four-game losing streak. The Rockies exploded in a seven-run fourth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate to seize control of the game.

Quantrill (2-3) continued his strong form from his previous outing, where he pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings in a win against Pittsburgh. Against the Giants, he allowed just one run on five hits, walked three, and struck out five to earn his second consecutive victory.

On the Giants’ side, Michael Conforto provided a spark with a home run among his two hits, and Thairo Estrada also notched two hits. However, the Giants were outmatched offensively, managing only seven hits compared to the Rockies’ 14. Shortstop Nick Ahmed exited the game in the fifth inning due to left wrist discomfort.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Conforto launched a leadoff homer, his seventh of the season, to put the Giants on the board.

Colorado responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth against Giants starter Keaton Winn (3-5). Tovar kickstarted the rally with his triple, followed by key hits from Ryan McMahon and Elias Diaz, quickly turning the tide in favor of the Rockies with a 2-1 lead.

The Rockies continued to pile on the runs with Sean Bouchard’s double, Brendan Rodgers’ single, and Brenton Doyle’s three-run homer, his fourth of the season. Winn struggled, allowing seven runs on eight hits in just 3 2/3 innings before being replaced by Randy Rodriguez.

Blackmon further solidified the Rockies’ lead with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, showcasing his consistency and contributing to his impressive career RBI tally, which now stands at 762, ranking fourth most in franchise history.
